2011 Performance!

program schedule | keynote | performance! | presenter bios

Here in Fatlandia, we’ve got the best entertainment this side of the fatlands! This year, we’ll kick things off with an ooh- and ahh-inspiring Fatshion show (emceed by Taueret Manu), featuring original and curated designs from your fellow NOLOSErs Deb Malkin, Bertha Pearl, and Rachel Kacenjar. Then, at the Saturday Night Cabaret, enjoy an amazing combination of song, dance, words, and more, hosted by the flabulous Kentucky Fried Woman. Finally, shake your glorious ass with DJ Durt until the fattest hours of the night! And don’t miss the Sunday Brunch Salon (co-curated/hosted by Genne Murphy and Abby Weintraub), featuring personal memoirs, stories, and images centered around a theme of Fat Histories/Fat Futures.

Alotta Boutte is here to tantalize your senses. Her clothes fly off all over the Bay (and beyond), and her voice can be heard regularly at Beach Blanket Babylon. A consummate performer, she has graced stages from Seattle to NYC, from Sweden to Japan and Finland.

Amithyst Fist is a 30-year-old Supersized Italian-American Queer Fat Femme. She hails from Portland, Oregon, where she lives, loves, messes up, and learns things over and over again. Her passions include writing it out, Social Justice through Radical Means, Queer Unity, Good Food, and Pit Bulls.

Arun Bryson is a queer, trans, biracial performer and mixed media artist who has contributed to the LGBTQ arts community in Canada and the United States for over a decade. An arts scholarship recipient, he studied at the University of Toronto and graduated with a degree in gender studies and visual arts. His mixed-media and written work often reflects his larger interest in social justice issues while navigating trauma through humor. He is currently based in New York with his partner, and is excited to be a NOLOSE participant for his second year in a row.

Big Moves' Phat Fly Girls, since 2001, have been delighting audiences up and down the West Coast (and beyond!) with their signature blend of fierce dance moves and unapologetic body-positivity. With seven active performing members, three choreographers, and two artistic directors, the Phat Fly Girls’ current repertory features jazz, lyrical, contemporary, musical theater, tap, and hip hop dance. The Phat Fly Girls are open to people of all sizes, genders, and sexual orientations, and welcome interested individuals with or without formal dance training. For more information about joining, booking, or just training with the Phat Fly Girls, email matilda@bigmoves.org or jessica@bigmoves.org; visit us online at www.bigmoves.org or on Facebook.

CHUBB: These Bay Area chunksters are ready to take off and fly you to flabulously sexy places. Drawn together by their fetish for accessories, lust for lunch breaks, and urge to undulate, they dare to live large and dream big. Featuring Drew Montana, Jake Danger, Delicio Del Toro, Lyric Styles, Gabe Oi, Brock Cocker, and Kentucky Fried Woman. CHUBB, because size... does matter!

Deb Malkin knew she was destined for fashion greatness when, at a young age, she was publicly seen wearing a purple velour jogging ensemble adorned with a 3D soft sculpture applique of a silver unicorn laying under a moon. She is also the owner of Re/Dress NYC, a plus-size vintage, resale, and modern boutique in Brooklyn. She is one of the founding creators of the Fat Girl Fleamarket, the largest NOLOSE fundraiser benefiting the scholarship fund. Deb and her Re/Dress shopgrrls are passionate about revolutionary retail, fierce fat bodies, and inspiring bold personal style. NOLOSE has been the scene of the crime for many of Deb’s outfits over the years, but none sweeter than her first bustier worn shyly back in 2001. Her life was never the same again.

DJ Durt is a dinosaur lover, fighter, DJ, maker-outer, fat activist, dancing queen, homo, community organizer, and likes to sing. She currently co-organizes radical queer dance parties in San Francisco and Oakland: Ships in the Night, Sissy Strut, and Secret Lovers. She also sings in the filthy-with-glitter punk band Cher Horowitz. For more adventures of Durt, check out djdurt.org.

In 1978, prompted by the truth she found in the Fat Underground literature packet, Judith Stein co-founded Boston Area Fat Liberation, an activist/support group for fat dykes. Through the mid-’80s, her organizing included running fat dyke support groups, speaking at women’s conferences, writing letters to the editors of fat-oppressive lesbian/gay and feminist press, and writing fat liberation fiction, poetry, and non-fiction articles. Judith remains deeply committed to fat liberation politics, a self-loving stance supported by her near-30-year relationship with her fat dyke wife, Meridith Lawrence.

Celebrating 32 years as a tap dancer, Kentucky Fried Woman (KFW)/Kentucky Grilled Man has been performing in, emceeing and producing queer cabaret shows since 2000. Since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2005, she has performed and produced as a solo artist and with other Bay Area queer performance artists, including Hogwarts Express: The Musical, Trekking with the Stars, ButchBallet, ButchTap, and Titland. You can catch what she is currently up to on her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/KyFriedWoman.

Maura Kelly has lived in the Philadelphia Gayborhood for 17 years, and has no plans to leave it.  She works at a (you guessed it) non-profit. Her favorite claim to fame is being one of the founding members of the 1998 Philadelphia Dyke March. She is most happy when surrounded by awesome, lovely queers who, having a shared experience of oppression, lift each other up with love, flirting, support and fierce community. (Okay, mostly the flirting.)

Margarita & Maybelle are a singer and her Autoharp. Margarita is an aspiring film historian, and all-around geeky smartypants. She's also a Fat Femme, Latina, and activist. She is excited to have the talents of Max to help her at this year's NOLOSE!

Miasia has performed all over the US, as well as Canada, Turkey and Egypt. Her goal as a teacher and performer is to continue opening the doorway of dance to include all bodies, sizes, and abilities.

Miss Cherry Tart is a delightfully delicious, devilishly sweet Seattle femme who entertains and challenges "-isms" with fierce fashion designs, tawdry tales, and glitterific burlesque.

Mz. Amy has been rockin' the mic in the Bay Area and beyond for several years now, and feels so thankful and blessed to appear in the NOLOSE Cabaret! She is also part of Movement Productions, which will be hosting Eden, the second annual women’s weekend at SF Pride (www.edeninthebay.com).

Nomy Lamm brings a radically vulnerable message of body-positivity to the whole wide world through a blend of 'zines, voice lessons, rock operas, performance art, storytelling, and collaboration.

Rachel Kacenjar started Sweetooth Couture in 2009 after she found a large demand for modern clothing from her customized plus size vintage clothing company, Cupcake & Cuddlebunny. Sweetooth is her line of utilitarian femme party dresses, skirts, and modern couture staples inspired by her passion for vintage style and modern fabrics. A self-taught designer who gleaned her sewing skills from her Grandmother, Rachel comes from a lineage of plus-sized women who have altered their own clothing for decades. Sweetooth Couture has walked the runway at both 2009 and 2010 Indie + Fashion Shows as well as Full Figured Fashion Week 2011, and is sold online globally and in a handful of boutiques around the country. For more info, check out www.sweetoothcouture.com and www.cupcakeandcuddlebunny.com.

Shazaam! is a Portland-based performance duo who believes that if you haven't wedged something in there, you haven't  been dancing hard enough. [AISLINN: include credit “Photo by Bloodhound Photography”]

Size Queen Clothing is designed and made by Bertha Pearl. We are all about fun, sexy, bright and comfy clothes in sizes XL to 8XL. Come see our shiny and colorful clothes!

Taueret Manu is a New Yorker to the marrow. She loves the divine, sriracha, pitbulls, friction, hibiscus juice, pink prosecco, sexual currency, poetry, and rioting. She dislikes White Santa/White Jesus/White Male God, the prison industrial complex, and the NYPD. She blogs at afrotitty.tumblr.com.

Valerie Troutt, a remarkable singer-songwriter, fuses R&B, soul, funk and jungle in her unique approach to Jazz and original compositions. Her ability as a Jazz vocalist and soul composer has inspired the hearts of many listeners. Valerie's accomplishments include a year-long run as an artist-in-residence at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco, and performing on the Jazz stage for the Best of East Bay Express party 2009.

Virgie Tovar is a fat semi-socialist fauxhemian smut-writing Latina high femme with an MA in Human Sexuality. She was voted "Best Sex Writer" by the San Francisco Bay Guardian in 2008. Virgie doubles as Dulce de Lecherous, and is a member of GLITTERACTION! A Radical Queerlesque Cabaret.
