NOLOSE 2012: Financial Assistance & Scholarships

(application deadline: June 1, 2012)

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE HAS PASSED. We're sorry, but we are not accepting new applications at this time.

How does this work?
We have three different categories and pots of money to distribute: A) Financial aid for registration; B) Travel and lodging scholarships for People of Color; C) Registration scholarships for individuals in underrepresented groups. These are reviewed separately and with different criteria, but qualified applicants are welcome to apply for all three! Registration scholarship decisions are made regardless of financial need.

PLEASE NOTE: Only self-identified fat folks are eligible to apply for FA, the POC travel and lodging fund, and scholarships.

Option A: NOLOSE Financial Aid
We base financial aid on living wage guidelines.

Please go to www.livingwage.geog.psu.edu to calculate the living wage for your area, based on US dollars. If your personal income is 150% or less than that amount, you are welcome to apply for financial aid. If your (individual) annual income is more than 150% of the living wage for where you live, we will not award you financial aid.

NOLOSE recognizes that this system does have its flaws; however, this cut-off is designed to make the FA process as objective and egalitarian as possible, and to ensure that FA goes to the people who need it most. While we would love to be able to offer assistance to everyone who attends the conference (and in the past, we have offered financial assistance to a large majority of conference-goers), the financial aid system is designed to give preference to those with demonstrated financial need. NOLOSE works hard to provide a quality conference while keeping costs low, and has many individuals to thank for raising funds to bring people who would not otherwise be able to attend. For the 2011 conference, we gave over $10,000 in financial aid, and scholarships to over 60 attendees.

More FA info: what, when, how and how much?

  1. We ask that everyone receiving FA contribute at least $75 toward their registration this year. Awards may be tiered, meaning some people will get more aid than others, based on need.
  2. FA applications that we receive after Friday, June 1st will depend on future fundraising efforts and availability of funding, so please apply early for your best chances. We will start making FA offers on or before Thursday, June 14th.
  3. To secure aid, you will need to pay the $75 (or the otherwise stated minimum) per your offer's instructions. In order to accept your FA or Scholarship award, you MUST register for the conference online and pay your balance (or set up a payment plan by emailing treasurer@nolose.org) by July 27th. Otherwise, we will redistribute funds to other applicants. You will be required to pay your minimum at the time of registration. All payments must be made in full by August 31st.

Option B: Travel and Lodging Scholarships for People of Color

This is a new fund in 2012 that will grant travel and lodging to POC coming to NOLOSE. This scholarship was created by the POC Caucus of NOLOSE to further the important work that was started at NOLOSE within said caucus, which has a history of expanding, challenging, and strengthening the fat justice movement in revolutionary ways. This scholarship is open to those who identify as a Person of Color, Indigenous, mixed-race, and/or bi- or multi-racial. Individuals may apply for the scholarship in $50 increments, for an award up to $250.

Scholarship decisions (in terms of both recipient and amount) will be weighed based on need as well as other factors. Some examples of factors to be considered are:

  1. Desire to contribute to POC work within NOLOSE and in the larger fat justice movement.
  2. Opportunity for someone to participate who lives in a place with little or no fat community.
  3. Individuals coming to the conference from geographical areas historically underrepresented at NOLOSE.

Option C: Scholarships
We are offering 12 free full-conference registrations to people in historically underrepresented groups in our community.

We will offer scholarships to two individuals in each of the following groups: People of Color, people with disabilities, supersized people, people over 50, folks outside of the US and North America, and trans people (we strongly encourage trans women to apply for this scholarship). You are encouraged to apply for a scholarship if you belong to one or more of these underrepresented groups. These registration scholarships are available regardless of applicants' income level.

The 12 scholarships cover conference registration fees only; travel and hotel expenses are still the responsibility of the attendee. Please note that those in need should also apply for the POC Travel and Lodging Fund (if applicable) and/or Financial Assistance (FA) to ensure better chances of aid. POC scholarship awardees are eligible to receive both scholarships and awards from the POC Travel and Lodging Fund. Scholarship awardees (POC and otherwise) are not, however, eligible to receive both scholarships and general Financial Assistance (FA).

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE HAS PASSED. We're sorry, but we are not accepting new applications at this time.
