i'd really enjoy a place to ask "uh, what was that word? second from the end?" where folks could give a try at answering, mebbe even using analogies and smiles
coz, sometimes it takes more courage than i have to point out i don't know what something means
i'll start, if you'd like to play along
what's misogyny?

plain and simple, misogyny is the hatred of women. that is the root meaning of the word. culturally, it also means the practice of hatred of women. so, violence against women (sexual assault and domestic violence, which are dramatically disproportionately perpetrated by men against women) is an example of practice of misogyny.

julia serano i believes changes the definition somewhat to be "a hatred and fear of femininity."
i really like that change. her book whipping girl is amazing and goes into this argument much more.

I think that is a somewhat valid definition, but I struggle with the exclusiveness of the word "feminity". The misogyny I experience and witness targeted at butch women and transmen is more about our shunning of feminity-predicated on a narrow definition of what it means to be a woman. The hatred and fear of women is perhaps more accurate, because feminity is not the thrust of the hatred entirely.
